My name is Kelly Byron, and I am the proud owner of Hallowell Candle Co. Some have asked how I started this part-time business. About five years ago, my mom moved from California to South Carolina to live closer to my sister as she was battling ovarian cancer. I would visit her frequently, and my sister and I were always trying to find activities that she could enjoy despite being so sick. One day, we visited a make-your-own candle shop in Augusta, GA. I thought to myself, This was so much fun—I should do something similar in Hallowell. My mom passed away shortly after this visit, and I knew she’d be so proud of me if I followed my dreams and passions. Making homemade candles will always remind me of my mom, whom I miss so much.
I am an educator by day and have also worked in the corporate world. One thing I know for sure is that I’ve always had a creative, crafty passion—from the padded picture frames I made as a little girl to starting a new business in my 50s. Now that I am an empty nester, I am able to focus some of my free time on fulfilling my creative passions.
